Claim is made that 'Walk and work' treadmill helps shed pounds - but it's not supported by scientific evidence, only by arithmetic...(o:

'Walk and work' treadmill helps shed pounds - Telegraph

Extract:

"Walking while you work might help fat people shed as much as 66 pounds - or nearly five stone - in one year, according to a study published today.

Vertical workstations, where office workers use their computers while walking on a treadmill, could shrink waistlines, according to research published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine."

This is a ludicrous claim, though I am willing to believe that it is made in ignorance rather than with a deliberate intention to deceive. See my blog entry http://aboutsalt.blogspot.com/2006/11/do-you-believe-that-obesity-is-caused.html

While exercise can be beneficial in many ways, there is no scientific evidence that it reduces obesity. - No controlled trials to show that exercise reduces obesity have been done, so there are only anecdotal claims. The calorie myth does not explain obesity. - These researchers are making the same mistake as those I wrote about in this blog entry http://aboutsalt.blogspot.com/2007/03/15-minutes-of-football-can-halve.html See also http://aboutsalt.blogspot.com/2006/10/exercise-has-little-effect-on.html

I invite you to read http://www.wildeaboutsteroids.co.uk/story.html for the political, business, medical and politically-related causes of obesity.

Calorie counting and advice about increasing exercise and reducing fat and carbohydrate intake to reduce obesity are ineffective, counter-productive and often damaging. - See the article in the British Medical Journal of November 2003 BMJ article for actual research on what happens when this advice is followed! - Over 800 obese adults were put on energy deficit diets, given diet sheets and exercise to do and help from trained staff, and apparently, visited fortnightly for a year, at the end of which they had GAINED weight!

Obesity is not caused by overeating. It is caused by fluid retention, which in turn is usually caused by sensitivity to salt, and excess weight is easily lost by cutting down on salt and salty food and eating plenty of potassium-rich food like fruit and fresh vegetables.
