Sausages, bacon, ham and other processed meats increase the risk of developing bowel cancer.

Sausage a day can increase bowel cancer risk

Extract from the Telegraph:

"Eating one sausage or three rashers of bacon a day can increase the risk of bowel cancer by a fifth, a medical expert has said.

The warning involved only 1.8oz (50g) of processed meat daily.

Researchers found that almost half of cancers could be prevented with lifestyle changes such as a healthier diet, using sunscreen, not smoking and limiting alcohol intake.

The charity World Fund Cancer Research (WCRF) said more needed to be done to get across the message that people who eat processed meat regularly are putting their health at risk.

The Government has introduced a bowel cancer screening programme to offer tests every two years to all men and women aged between 60 and 69. Older people could ask for testing.

But experts believe it is more effective to prevent bowel cancer, the second most lethal form of the disease after lung cancer.

Prof Martin Wiseman, the medical and scientific adviser for the WCRF, said there was convincing evidence of a link between processed meats and cancer.

Processed meat is preserved by smoking, curing, salting or the addition of preservatives.

Examples include ham, bacon, pastrami, salami, hot dogs and processed sausages.

This includes hamburgers and minced meat if it has been preserved with salt or chemical additives.

One in 20 people develops bowel cancer and 16,000 people die from it each year.

Prof Wiseman said: "We are more sure now than ever before that eating processed meat increases your risk of bowel cancer.

"Whether it is bacon or ham, the safest amount to eat is none at all.""

It is advisable to cut down on all salted food, particularly if you are overweight/obese, because all overweight and obese people are sensitive to salt, and it is this salt sensitivity that has caused them to become overweight with fluid retention.

Lose weight, reduce your risk of most cancers, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, stroke, heart disease, vascular dementia, osteopenia, osteoporosis, hypercholesterolaemia, depression, liver and kidney problems, and improve your health in many other ways without drugs or expense by eating less salt! - Try it! - You will feel so much better!

NHS hospitals are throwing away as much as half of their food

Hospitals throw away 13m meals

Extract from the Sunday Telegraph:

"Close to 13 million meals were thrown away last year, with 33 hospitals dumping more than a quarter of their food, including two that discarded more than was eaten.

Meanwhile, almost 140,000 patients left hospital malnourished, double the figure a decade ago.

Last year, Ivan Lewis, the health minister, admitted that many elderly people were in effect being starved in hospitals. He said that some were given a single scoop of mashed potato as a meal, while others were "tortured" with trays of food placed beyond their reach and no help with eating.

Now figures uncovered by The Sunday Telegraph show dozens of hospitals in England and Wales throwing away more than a quarter of their meals untouched. At Leeds General Infirmary, 55 per cent of meals are thrown away, while 53 per cent at nearby St James' University Hospital end up in the bin.

Their "cook-chill" convenience food is prepared at a factory in South Wales before being driven 220 miles to be "regenerated" on hospital ward kitchens in Yorkshire."

The meals I had in the Sheffield Northern General Hospital as a patient last year were mostly very poor. And almost all meal choices were high in salt, despite the head dietician's claims to the contrary...)o: As a steroid victim I must avoid salt and salty food. This meant that much of the time in the hospital I had very little to eat. My salt problem was not taken seriously and most of the kitchen staff were unaware that the meals they provided were high in salt.

US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) gives bad advice about how to lose excess weight. There is no evidence to support their main advice.

FDA advice on How to Lose and Manage Weight:
Watch Your Calories, Be Active

Most of the FDA advice on How to Lose and Manage Weight is COMPLETELY WRONG AND WILL NOT HELP OVERWEIGHT/OBESE PEOPLE TO LOSE WEIGHT!

Reducing calories DOES NOT REDUCE OBESITY! - However many medics and 'experts' tell you that cutting calories will make you excess weight, it is NOT TRUE. - They've never even subjected this advice to scientific trial. This advice does not work. It does not reduce obesity. Nor does increasing exercise reduce obesity.

This is because obesity is caused by fluid retention, not by eating too many calories.

WHEN is the truth going to be told about obesity?

Read my Mensa article Obesity and the Salt Connection

All that is necessary to curb the growing incidence of obesity is to tell the truth about what causes it! - Obesity is NOT caused by overeating. It is caused by fluid retention, frequently because of taking prescribed medications, especially steroids such as prednisolone, prednisone and HRT, and anti-depressants such as amitriptyline. (When doctors prescribe drugs that cause sodium retention and water retention they should warn the patient not to eat salt, or food containing salt, while taking the medication. When they do not give this warning, the inevitable consequence is considerable weight gain because of fluid retention.)

Read here about the groups of people who are vulnerable to salt: vulnerable groups

Obesity can be easily reduced by seriously reducing your salt/sodium intake and eating plenty of fruit and fresh vegetables. - It is important not to restrict calories. - 'Slimming' or 'dieting' is unnecessary, ineffective and often harmful.

Vitamin D supplements may protect children from type-1 diabetes

The overwhelming body of science supports vitamin D supplements for protection against the development of type-1 diabetes, indicates a new meta-analysis. According to data from five observational studies, infants who received vitamin D supplements were 29 per cent less likely to develop type-1 diabetes than non-supplemented infants, reports the review in the Archives of Disease in Childhood.

Antibiotics for sinus infections do not work.

Doctors should cut down on antibiotic prescriptions for a common infection because the drugs do not work, researchers say. Around 90% of people with sinusitis in the UK are prescribed antibiotics. But an analysis of nine trials published in The Lancet shows the drugs make no difference even if the patient has been ill for more than seven days.

Cough syrups have killed some children

Child cough syrups removed in overdose scare

Extracts from the Telegraph:

"Six cough syrups for toddlers are being removed from general sale after five children died from overdoses.

The medicines regulator warned that children under the age of two should not be given powerful cough medicines. It ordered that the products be placed behind the counter and sold only under the supervision of a pharmacist until labels can be changed.

Five British children have died since 1981 after parents mistakenly gave them too much syrup or used several products with the same active ingredient, it said.
In addition to the six medicines being removed from general sale immediately, a range of more than 100 other products, not directly aimed at children under two, will have their labels altered.
The new labels will include warnings not to use the medicines for young children and to exercise extreme care when giving them to any child between two and six.
The change, ordered by the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency, follows similar moves in America where children have died.
Cough Medicines to be taken off the shelves:
The following products are currently licensed for use by children under two. They are to be taken off shelves and sold to parents (with children aged two or over) with appropriate dosage instructions.

Why is it so easy for slim people to stay slim?

Well it's not because they are careful what they eat! - As you know, slim people can eat as much as they like of anything they like and not put weight on... - They certainly don't have to count calories...

And it's not because they take a lot of exercise. Many of them take no exercise at all.

And it's not because of their metabolism! - What nonsense that idea is!

No. - It's because they have healthy veins that don't get distended/swollen, causing fluid retention! - Fluid retention is what causes weight gain and obesity.

For all of us who are not slim and who would like to lose weight - our veins have become weakened. - We have to reduce our salt intake in order to reduce the fluid retention. - So eat less salt and you will lose weight.

It's very interesting. Read about it:

Pregnant women 'must not drink any alcohol' - new advice from Nice.

Pregnant women 'must not drink any alcohol'

Extract from the Telegraph:

"The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (Nice) previously said mothers-to-be could drink 1.5 units of alcohol a day, equivalent to a small glass of wine, after the first three months when the risk of miscarriage is highest.

But now, even though no new evidence has been published on the dangers of alcohol to babies, Nice is telling pregnant women to abstain altogether, especially during the first three months.

The new guidance warns women not to drink at all in the first trimester and ideally not at all until after the birth.

Excessive drinking during pregnancy causes foetal alcohol syndrome, which can leave children with impaired IQ and low birth weight, leading to severe learning difficulties and addiction problems in adulthood."

I heard a programme about the life-long suffering of a child born with FAS and it seems to me that abstinence from alcohol during the pregnancy must be well worth it not to put this suffering onto the child for life.

Pregnant mothers would also benefit by eating less salt during their pregnancy. This would reduce their risk of high blood pressure and of excessive weight gain and of developing diabetes during the pregnancy.

UK Dementia timebomb 'will hit 1.2m' by 2028

Dementia timebomb 'will hit 1.2m'

Extracts from the Sunday Telegraph:

"The number of patients diagnosed with diseases such as Alzheimer's will rise by 70 per cent to more than 1.2 million by 2028.

Experts warn that there will be almost twice as many sufferers living in nursing homes. However, psychiatrists and charities say that not enough is being spent on research, treatment and care. One professor said he was "ashamed" by the state of the services on offer.

Dementia robs victims of their identities as memory, speech and understanding are lost."

"In November a report by the Alzheimer's Society said that many patients suffered physical and mental neglect. Many residents were left alone in their bedrooms, while others were shouted at, or left unwashed, the investigation said.

Neil Hunt, the chief executive of the society, said the predictions showed the urgent need for a significant increase in services and research. "We know that delaying the onset of dementia by five years would halve the number of deaths from Alzheimer's. If we are to defeat dementia it is vital we invest in more research," he said."

Well vascular dementia could easily be reduced by curbing the reckless over-prescribing of drugs like steroids and anti-depressants which cause vascular damage, salt sensitivity, fluid retention and obesity. Similarly there should be a legal limit of the proportion of salt/sodium food manufacturers are allowed to add to their processed foods and ready meals: - certainly no more than 0.5g sodium to 100g of product. And they should, by law, HAVE to produce some processed foods/ready meals and bread with NO ADDED SALT WHATEVER for the people damaged and disabled by salt sensitivity. People should be told the truth about salt. - Our bodies do not require ANY added salt whatsoever, because we only need a tiny proportion of salt and that is already present in all food and in every drop of water. (Of course if you are taking prescription drugs they may have damaged your body chemistry and so you may need extra sodium/salt because of the wretched drugs.)

And dieting advice should be prohibited. - Dieting is unnecessary, ineffectual, counter-productive and harmful because it results in inadequate nutrition. All that is necessary to reduce excess weight is to avoid eating salt and salty food.

Women targeted in drink campaign

Extract from the Telegraph:

"Middle-aged women will be targeted in a hard-hitting anti-alcohol campaign after research found that just one large glass of wine per night could increase the risk of breast cancer by 60 per cent.

Up to 2,000 women every year die from breast cancer linked to drinking, with a growing number also suffering other cancers, liver damage and fertility problems."

Salt intake also increases the risk of most cancers, including breast cancer, and also damages the liver (and kidneys, et al).

Older celebrity mums 'promote myth of fertility', but pregnancy in older women is riskier.

Older celebrity mums 'promote myth of fertility'

Extracts from the Telegraph:

"Celebrities who give birth in their 40s promote a dangerous myth of older motherhood, a fertility expert has warned.

The glamorous image of 40-something Hollywood mothers hides the reality of increased risk of infertility and birth complications, according to Prof Brian Lieberman, an adviser to the government body that regulates IVF clinics.

High-profile actresses who have become older mothers in recent months include Halle Berry, who had her first child on Sunday at 41, and Marcia Cross, the Desperate Housewives star, who delivered twins at 44.

Prof Lieberman warned that the risk of miscarriage rises from 15 per cent to 25 per cent for mothers over 40 and there was a greater chance of Down's syndrome."

"Other well-known older mothers include the singer Madonna, who gave birth to her son Rocco when she was 42 in 2000, and Salma Hayek, the actress, who became a mother last year at 41. Kidman, 40, confirmed in January that she was three months pregnant.

Older mothers are also at greater risk of diabetes, high blood pressure and are more likely to have a caesarean."

Euthanasia debate woman found dead at home

  • Dignitas uses gas, plastic bag in assisted death
  • Chantal Sebire, 52, a former school teacher and mother of three, whose case reignited the debate about euthanasia, was found dead at her home in the eastern town of Plombieres-les-Dijon, a French government official said.

The circumstances of her death were not immediately clear.

On Monday, a court in the city of Dijon rejected Mrs Sebire's request to be allowed to receive a lethal dose of barbiturates under a doctor's supervision."

Easter eggs could be fatal to your dog. Chocolate intended for humans is risky for your pet because the theobromine in it is poisonous to dogs.

Why Easter eggs could be fatal for your dog
    Extract from the Telegraph:

"The PDSA, Britain's leading veterinary charity, analysed the theobromine content of chocolates - the chemical component poisonous to dogs - and found that luxurious brands of plain chocolate were the most lethal.

A 30g bar of dark chocolate can contain more than 700mg of theobromine, enough to kill a small dog such as a cocker spaniel.

White chocolate contains the least amount of theobromine - about 0.27mg per 30g bar - but the PDSA warns that any chocolate intended for humans can be a risk for pets.

Elaine Pendlebury, its senior veterinary surgeon, said: "I have lost count of the number of chocolate poisoning cases I have seen during my years as a vet. There really is no place in a pet's diet for chocolate."

Toxicity symptoms include vomiting, hyperactivity, salivation and increased heart rate. In severe cases it can cause fits."

Disfigured French woman loses euthanasia bid

    Extract from the Telegraph:

"Euthanasia is legal in Belgium and the Netherlands. Luxembourg is in the process of passing a law allowing it, while in Switzerland doctors can prepare the lethal dose but patients must take it on their own.

Mrs Sebiré, who has children aged 29, 27 and 13, was diagnosed nearly eight years ago with esthesioneuroblastoma, a rare form of cancer.

France has been moved by pictures of the woman before and after her illness, which has left her face severely deformed.

She described how children ran away from her in the street.

She cannot use morphine to calm the intense pain in her swollen eyes because of the side effects, has difficulty eating, sleeps sitting up and often suffers haemorrhages.

Despite her heart-rending pleas, health minister Roselyne Bachelot said that "neither the medical world nor the government can promote euthanasia, no matter how serious the illness"."

If you are fat then you obviously need to eat more calories than if you were slim. - Don't let any foolish person tell you that you need to eat less!

Foolish people sometimes tell you that you should eat less food/fewer calories than your body requires - that you can live off 'your fat'. - This is nonsense. When you eat less than your body requires, your body has to try to live off itself. - So your bones will get weaker, your skin will become thinner, your nails will weaken, you will lose some hair (which will not return...)o:) - And you will GAIN weight, because your blood vessel walls will get thinner and weaker, and thus your blood vessels will hold more water, and the increased fluid retention will increase your weight.

More comment about the Seroxat scandal

From the latest newsletter of The Dr. Rath Health Foundation:

Big Pharma really makes me feel sick
FOR CLARITY'S sake, remind yourself that nobody at GlaxoSmithKline , Britain 's biggest pharmaceutical company (2006 revenues: $42.8 billion; income $10.135bn), is to face prosecution. The company insists that it did nothing wrong with regard to the anti-depressant drug Seroxat. The Medical and Healthcare Regulatory Agency believes, on the other hand, that the company withheld the full results of trials, particularly those suggesting that the medication could increase the chances of suicide among teenagers. The government is content, however, to "tighten" rules on information disclosure as they affect an industry that ranks, after oil, as Britain 's second biggest export earner.
Read article by Ian Bell in the Sunday Herald (UK)
Comment: Cynics might argue that the British government’s decision not to prosecute GlaxoSmithKline for withholding the full results of drug trials is a direct result of the fact that Jean-Pierre Garnier, GlaxoSmithKline ’s CEO, is a member of Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s Business Council

Vitamin D supplements can help young children to 'ward off diabetes'

Vitamin D supplements 'ward off diabetes'

    Extract from the Telegraph:

"Supplements of vitamin D can help young children to ward off diabetes in later life, researchers report.

The chance of developing Type 1 diabetes fell by almost a third in those who received extra doses of the vitamin.

The disease is caused when the body destroys cells in the pancreas, which regulate insulin. It often starts in early infancy and is on the rise across western Europe.

It is the most common form of diabetes among people under 40 and affects about 350,000 people in Britain, including 20,000 children.

A review of more than 6,000 cases found that children given additional vitamin D were around 30 per cent less likely to develop Type 1 diabetes than those not given it.

The higher and more regular the dose of the vitamin, the less likelihood there was of developing the disease."

Professor Steve Bloom has developed a new 'diet drug' (i.e. pharmaceutical junk) with which to harm obese patients.

Diet treatment ready for human trials

    Extracts from the Telegraph:

"A new generation of diet drug which could be as effective as weight-loss surgery could soon be on the market after the announcement that it was ready for human trials.

Scientists believe the drug, which creates a false feeling that a person is full, could offer a breakthrough in the treatment of obesity, which is predicted to reach epidemic levels in the coming decades."

"It has been developed by Steve Bloom, a medical professor at the university, who has produced a synthetic version of a hormone called oxyntomodulin, which is known to help obese patients reduce their food intake."

More junk science, predicated on the false belief that obese people become obese because of overeating and will lose excess weight by dieting/undereating...)o: - Obesity is actually caused by fluid retention/salt sensitivity and can easily, swiftly AND SAFELY be reduced by avoiding salt and salty food.

Fear of hospital-acquired infections is driving NHS patients abroad for treatment

Superbug fear drives NHS patients abroad

    Extract from the Evening Standard:

"Record numbers of Londoners are abandoning the NHS and travelling abroad for medical treatment.

About 22,000 people in the capital went overseas for surgery and dental treatment last year - a rise of nearly a quarter on 2006.

Fear over infection from superbugs is now a major reason for them opting to go private instead of receiving treatment on the NHS.

More than half of surgery patients said they were worried about contracting an infection such as MRSA in a British hospital. This comes a day after the Evening Standard revealed more than nine patients a week are dying from hospital acquired infections.

The findings are published today by research group Treatment Abroad from its international medical tourist survey.

Its report also highlights a growing lack of confidence in the NHS - nearly two thirds opted for overseas operations to avoid NHS waiting lists.

An estimated 100,000 people from Britain travelled abroad for surgery and dental treatment last year, including fertility treatment, knee operations and cosmetic surgery. This compares with 70,000 in 2006."

Thousands of mistakes in NHS cancer treatment

Thousands of mistakes in cancer treatment

    Extract from the Telegraph:

"Thousands of mistakes were made in treating cancer patients last year and more than 500 cases were missed by doctors, official figures show.

The scale of the problem emerged on Monday as it was disclosed that the NHS has paid out almost £50 million in negligence claims related to cancer since 1995.

In total 502 cases of cancer were missed in 2006-7, an increase of almost 20 per cent on the previous year's 433.

The number of mistakes made in treating patients who had been correctly diagnosed also rose.

Errors in chemotherapy treatment increased by 1.3 per cent to 6,344.

There were 1,854 mistakes in radiotherapy treatment, a rise of 2.6 per cent on the previous 12 months."

And if you want a bit of a laugh about this very serious problem, read the ludicrous and complacent response from a Department of Health spokesman: "An increase in reported patient safety incidents is not a sign that the NHS is less safe for patients - quite the reverse."

Don't blame gravity for your drooping breasts and buttocks! - It's fluid retention that's to blame. - Here's what to do:

Avoid dieting and avoid eating salt and salty food and this will reduce the problem. - It is salt that is holding that excess water in your body. - Water is heavy so it drags down the 'loose' parts of your body. When you cut down on salt/sodium, some excess salt and the water it attracts to itself will be excreted from your body in the urine. - The droopiness will lessen, you will lose excess weight and you will feel ever so much better...(o:

Lose weight, reduce fluid retention, reduce your risk of most cancers, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, stroke, heart disease, vascular dementia, osteopenia, osteoporosis, hypercholesterolaemia, depression, liver and kidney problems, and improve your health in many other ways without drugs or expense by eating less salt! - Try it! - You will feel so much better!

Law on drugs tests to be tightened. - The drug companies have lots of lawyers. I'll believe it when it happens, not before.

Law on drugs tests to be tightened
    Article in the Telegraph

    Extract:

"Drugs companies must reveal the results of clinical trials as soon as they uncover potential problems with their medicines, the Government has announced.

In a statement, Kent Woods, Chief Executive of the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), has said it will "take immediate steps to ensure the law is strengthened, so that there can be no doubt as to companies' obligations to report safety issues."

The move comes after a four-year investigation into how GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) withheld the full results of their trials into the anti-depressant Seroxat on children.

The Government watchdog criticised the company, which is Europe's biggest drugs manufacturer, for not handing over the trial data earlier.

But it added that criminal charges could not be brought as robust legislation was not in place at the time.

Mr Woods said: "I remain concerned that GSK could and should have reported this information earlier than they did. All companies have a responsibility to patients and should report any adverse data signals to us as soon as they discover them.

"This investigation has revealed important weaknesses in the drug safety legislation in force at the time."

The trial data revealed that there was a higher risk of suicidal behaviour among children younger than 18 on Seroxat than those given a placebo.

The results also found that Seroxat was ineffective in dealing with depression in those under 18.

It was handed to the Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Authority (MHRA) in May 2003, despite GSK having allegedly been aware of the results since 1998.

A month later, in June 2003, the MHRA announced that doctors must stop giving Seroxat to those under 18.

Miss Primarolo will say that GSK should have informed the MHRA earlier than it did, but that the drugs company will not face criminal charges.

The MHRA investigation found that the company could have told them earlier, but did not break the letter of the law by not doing so, as current legislation is not clear as to when a company should reveal the results of its clinical trials."

This is shocking! - I can't say that I've much respect for the MHRA. - It seems to have had mixed loyalties. There's been a lot of GSK (GlaxoSmithKline) cash associated with the bank balances of members of the MHRA.

If anybody is under the misapprehension that the MHRA - Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (An executive agency of the Department of Health) is doing a good job and is not overly influenced by or even in the pocket of the drug companies I invite you to read this page, the author of which has a particular interest in the drug, Seroxat - http://fiddaman.blogspot.com/2007_04_05_archive.html - Here is an extract from the page:

"I've looked through the pdf file for THE COMMITTEE ON SAFETY OF MEDICINES ANNUAL REPORT FOR 2004 and will show you all those members who have ties with Glaxosmithkline.

Remember, The Committee on the Safety of Medicines (CSM) was 'apparently' an independent advisory committee that for 40 years advised the UK Licensing Authority on the quality, efficacy and safety of medicines - In other words they offered advice to the MHRA. It was replaced on 30 October 2005 by the Commission on Human Medicines which combines the functions of both the former committee and the Medicines Commission

Surely personnel working to protect the public from the harm that prescription drugs can and do cause, should be strictly forbidden from being paid consultants to drug companies and doing research and publicity for them and from being holders of drug company shares?

Prescribed drugs do far, far more harm than good. Their side-effects account for most of the serious avoidable illness in the parts of the world that have the misfortune to be users of Westernised medicine.

As well as giving information about salt, salt sensitivity and about obesity, my blog heavily criticises the drug companies and their drug-pushers - i.e. the medical profession.

Obese children will die younger than their parents.

Obese children to die younger than parents
    Article in the Telegraph

It is true that obese children will die younger than their parents - and it will be entirely the fault of the medical profession and the government agencies and others who have been insisting for years that obesity is increasing because of overeating and that the way to reduce obesity is to eat less and to exercise more. - OBESITY IS CAUSED BY FLUID RETENTION, NOT BY OVEREATING. It is reduced by eating less salt, not by dieting and exercising.

It is vitally important for children not to eat a lot of salt and salty food.

When children become fat it is essentially because they are eating salty food. Children are especially vulnerable to salt because of their small size and small blood volume, and because their blood vessels are weaker than those of adults. Salt, and the water it attracts to it, can more easily distend weak blood vessels than fully mature ones. The resulting increase in blood volume and other fluid retention results in weight gain, as well as higher blood pressure and many other undesirable consequences. The smaller the child, the less salt they should have - and a baby, of course, should have no salt at all. - Babies can die if they are fed salty food.

Because children have much smaller bodies than adults it would be best if they had no more than half as much salt as adults. Most children, however, have much more than this because they eat so many snacks and instant foods. Just one cheeseburger, for instance, contains almost double the recommended daily salt maximum for children. There are high amounts of salt in packet soups, instant noodles, ketchup and sauces, sausages, burgers and savoury snacks. Fat children will lose weight fast if they eat less salt. And even faster still if they eat plenty of fresh fruit and unsalted vegetables, because these are rich in potassium, which helps to displace sodium from the body.

More and more dogs are becoming obese.

One in three of Britain's dogs overweight

    Extract from the Telegraph:

"Nearly two million dogs in Britain are overweight as obesity levels soar in our pets, a leading charity has warned.

PDSA, the veterinary charity, released its report to coincide with Crufts, which begins today. It found that almost one in three dogs is overweight - nine per cent more than last year. Many of the animals suffer from heart disease, breathing difficulties, diabetes and arthritis."

It is salt and salty food that causes obesity in domestic pets like dogs and cats. If you feed your dog some of your pizzas or other fast food takeaways, for example, you will cause it to put on weight because pizzas and other takeaways contain a lot of salt. - And because of the smaller size of dogs and cats, salt does more damage to dogs and cats than to humans.

Dog food made and sold for dogs will not be high in salt and so will not cause your pet to become obese and get all the other problems of ill-health that are associated with obesity.

Big Pharma - promoting diseases as multi-billion dollar markets for patented drugs?

Here is an extract from the Dr Rath Foundation (The Dr. Rath Health Foundation) newsletter which I received today:

    February 26, 2008

Court Considers Protecting Drug Makers From Lawsuits
WASHINGTON — Less than a week after issuing a sweeping ruling that bars most lawsuits against medical device makers, the Supreme Court heard arguments Monday in the first of two cases that could determine whether drug makers receive similar protection.
Read article in the New York Times (USA)
Comment: Needless to say, the ruling that is being sought here is a last desperate attempt to avert the imminent collapse of the pharmaceutical investment business with patented drugs. Whatever the Supreme Court eventually rules in these cases, the truth about the pharmaceutical industry – including its toxic chemotherapy and antiretroviral drugs - will remain unchanged: While pretending to deliver health to the world, its entire existence is based on promoting diseases as multi-billion dollar markets for patented drugs.

    February 25, 2008

Wyeth, Pfizer Ordered to Pay $2.75 Million Over Drugs
Hormone-replacement drugs made by Wyeth and a Pfizer Inc. unit caused an Arkansas woman's breast cancer and she deserves at least $2.75 million in damages, jurors ruled in the companies' first loss in federal court. Jurors in Little Rock, Arkansas, deliberated 12 hours over two days before finding the combination of Wyeth's Premarin and Pharmacia & Upjohn's Provera menopause drugs helped cause Donna Scroggin's cancer. The former factory worker had a double mastectomy after taking hormone-replacement drugs for about 10 years.

Pharmaceutical companies are still getting away with concealing negative findings about their drugs.

Drug giants warned: Tell the truth on medicines
    Article in the Independent

Experts criticised the stranglehold exerted by multinational companies over clinical trials, which has led to biased results, under-reporting of negative findings and selective publication driven by the market, which was worth £10.1bn in the UK in 2006, amounting to 11 per cent of total NHS costs.

    Extract from the article:

"Peter Littlejohns, the clinical and public health director of Nice, said: "The regulatory authorities have access to everything. Obviously we have access to the published data and we do ask the industry for unpublished data, but it is up to the companies whether to deliver it or not. We have no power to demand it. The issue is that it relies on the good will of the industry."

Professor Mike Clarke, the director of the UK Cochrane Centre, an international collaboration between researchers in 100 countries which has published more than 3,000 systematic reviews of published trials to establish best medical practice, said lack of co-operation from the drug industry was damaging medical care.

"When we ask for details of a trial the company might tell us nothing. We have even less power than Nice. Researchers trying to make sense of trials for decision-makers need to have access to this data. If we have only got access to half of the data, when we see evidence that a drug works we don't know whether to believe it or not.

"It makes us doubtful – that's the big worry. The companies are in the business of making profits – but they are also in the business of providing safe, effective health care."

Legislation to compel the drug industry to publish its results was included in Labour's manifesto at the 2005 election and last month the Commons Health Select Committee demanded that Nice be given unfettered access to all clinical trial results.

Yesterday, the Government said it had been told that compelling the industry to publish trial data would not be allowed and it was instead pursuing a voluntary approach, developing a "searchable register" of all trials that have taken place in the UK and pressing the EU to make its own confidential register public.

A spokesman for the Department of Health said: "The Government has consistently supported open access to information about research when the findings could affect decisions about treatment or health outcomes. We planned to support the principle of mandatory registration of clinical trials in the UK, but legal advice stated this would be illegal under EU law."

So it's the EU that's blocking the mandatory registration of clinical trials in the UK?

Avoid prescription drugs if you possibly can. They do far more harm than good and clearly the information provided by the pharmaceutical companies cannot be trusted.
